returning soon...

I know I know our blogging skills are truly lacking... but we have good reasons...

I have been busy trying to prepare for the school year (and the anxiety of having a sub in my class for 3 weeks makes me do things in even more detail than I usually would).
I have been spending lots of time with Payton since she stays awake a little more these days.
We have been doing some shopping...
And my brother and niece were in town for this past weekend (which is when I would usually load up on posts)

Tomorrow I am going to set up my classroom (AGAIN...don't ask). Tuesday I will be locking myself away to finish planning. Friday I will be bringing Payton to my work to meet some teachers who missed out on her Forest debut. Then next Monday (even though I am on leave..) I will be spending the day in my classroom meeting my students and trying to cram as much of my procedures into them as I possibly can. And I plan to go in an hour or so each morning that week to keep reinforcing those... yep I have lost it and am not ready to give up complete control of my classroom. I accept it.

But I swear once I get this all taken care of and all my lessons done, I will be back to posting. We are doing some 1.5 month photos with Payton (because we have been that busy that her 2nd 1month photo shoot has yet to happen) and those will be up soon enough.

Forgive us for this lapse in posting...

And a BIG Congratulations to Jil and Brian on the birth of their little boy Brycen!!! (

We are sorry this is late!) Your gifts will be on their way soon (we just have to make 2 things for you so we can ship it all at once... and your thank you card from us has been sitting here for a couple weeks waiting to be mailed too... it says your gifts will be on the way soon... so when you get the card, inevitably in the box with the gifts, forgive us... we are just not on the ball these days!!)

She found her mobile!!

Payton has been rockin out in her luxury swing a lot and just recently (Tuesday in fact) she found her mobile. She only looked at it for a few seconds on Tuesday but Wednesday she was just enamored. So much so that I had time to dig out the video camera and record her... 3 times I got her doing it. I won't show you all three videos because they are pretty much all the same... but I will share with you this short clip. She is just getting so big!

Month 1 Mommy Must haves...

Now that Payton has been around for a month, I decided I would do a post about the things that we probably couldn't make it without...

1. This beautiful swing...

Payton just loves to lounge in it and she is now starting to look at and enjoy the mobile!! (Video to come!) A lot of times she will hang out and look around until she is just too tired to stay awake anymore.

2. Her bouncy seat...

First of all, it bounces on its own. So I can take her to any place in the house and she just bounces away while I get things done. She has come with me to brush my teeth and get ready, in the bedroom to straighten up, and in the kitchen to do dishes. We altered it a little by hanging one of her carseat toys to it (the black and white one) because it rattles and was longer. She enjoys it (you have seen the video already).

3. Her sound machine...

My parents got this for us and it has been wonderful. It has 3 sounds and 3 or 4 lullaby songs. She usually listens to the ocean or the rain and relaxes and goes to sleep. It has a timer on it which is perfect. It also has a projector with 3 different projections. We haven't used that feature yet.

4. The chicco carrier...

I tried multiple different carriers before finding this one. I tried an infantino breathe that we had registered for but I am not sure what the makers of that thing were thinking. It was such a chore to figure out how to get it on the first time that we gave up. I tried a moby but I didn't like it and didn't trust it. I know people swear by them but no matter how tight I tied it, it still felt loose. When Ash was here we went to BRU on a mission to find one I liked. I tried a different infantino which was easier to get on, but I didn't trust it. There was another one we looked at that I didn't like. Finally we tried this one (took it out of the packaging and walked around with her in it) and as soon as I got Payton in I knew we were buying it. She got nice and cozy, rested her head, and went to sleep. We use this when we go on errands that don't require the travel system or to places that don't have carts (or their carts are too small). People have reviewed it and have a hard time getting the baby in and out (which admittedly I did too at first) but I figured out if I loosen the straps around her legs just a tiny bit she gets in and out a lot easier. It doesn't hurt my back at all. We even took a walk with her in it (which gave me more of a work out!)

5. Sorcerer Radio (and other Live365 stations)...

When I was pregnant I listened to live365 everyday and listened to the Disney park stations. Now Payton listens to sorcerer radio (on our phones) at night from 8-9. We listen to Illuminations, Spectromagic, Wishes, and Fantasmic. It gets us so excited for her first disney trip (in 3 years...). It actually calms her down at times too. If we are hanging out during the day and want to listen to music I go to live365 and listen to park music with her. We dance to it and sing what we can.

6. Halo sleep sack swaddler...

Payton practically needs to be swaddled to sleep. At least for her first round of sleep anyways. We were using blankets until she was a little bigger to fit into these. These are so much quicker and easier than using blankets. And you can see in this picture how peacefully she sleeps. Granted, she will bust her hands out eventually in the night but that is ok.

I am sure there may be other things that we find are must haves but right now, these are the big ones. I am off to edit some sad excuse for one month baby pictures and try to get them ready to post... among other posts I want to get set up. We will see how much Payton lets me get done...

Added a few pictures

We took Payton's one month pictures. She wasn't very into it and actually fell asleep so we are going to try again tonight. I edited a couple (with her laying on me) and loaded them into the one month post. Tim is going to do a couple edits tonight too. Hopefully we get some better pictures tonight. So lucky for you, you got a sneak peek and some final products... and hopefully in a couple days you will get another set of pics!

One Month Mortifier...

Let me preface this by saying that 1. it isn't that mortifying and 2. everything in this post is completely ok because our little girl is cute...

and before I go on and tell you what was so mortifying hilarious... let me give you her update from the dr today (which is where this picture was taken)... she now weighs 8lbs 15oz and is 21 inches long. She is right at the 50th percentile still.

Now onto the hilarity that came today. When taking a baby to the dr (for anyone who doesn't have one or quite remember how this goes), you have to take their clothes off and they measure their length then we take the diaper off and they weigh her. Usually if a baby is going to go to the bathroom when naked, it would seem that it would happen on the scale... I mean they do put a paper down on it just incase. Payton has never done this. We are 3 for 3 for no accidents on the scale... however we can say now we are 1 for 3 in the "going to the bathroom while completely naked and being held in the air"... Yes folks, Payton promptly peed right after I picked her up off the scale. I was holding her out (luckily she wasn't up against me) for the nurse to measure around her head and she just started going...and going... and going. Tim at first was trying to prevent it from going all over the place (he had a wipe in his hand.. little did we know how much was coming) and it was just going all over... there was no hope. And it didn't stop. I swear the girl held it in just for this occasion. The nurse said it happens all the time and we (ok maybe I more than Tim) could not contain my laughter. The nurse finally said "geez girl how much you got in there?!" Yep she left quite a mess on their floor. I felt so bad! But again.. look back up at that picture and tell me, how could you even be mad with that face?!

We also discussed Payton's poop concerns (I'll spare you the details) and we couldn't quite convey what we were trying to say and describe it. Luckily she did that (with diaper on-thankfully) while in the appt. too, and her Dr said everything is fine. Phew. (Otherwise we were having to flip a coin to see who was going to have to give this baby a suppository...) We are, however, testing out a sensitive formula to see if it helps her fussiness. We have only made one bottle so far so I am not sure of the effect. (She has pooped twice since that bottle though, without much struggle.) We will try it for a few days before making any decisions. Who woulda thought that anytime in my life I would be blogging about poop?!

Also, please accept this pitiful cell phone picture to hold you over until we can get her one month pictures done. Today was just too busy and she was a little too much of a diva yesterday and didn't want to participate. I am hoping to get them done by the end of this week. Let's cross our fingers! I promise to update once I add the pictures.

Happy 1 Month Baby Girl!

Ok so our 5 day hiatus lasted a little longer than 5 days. We were very worn out from our visit with Auntie and really needed to catch up on our sleep. Add to that Payton going through a growth spurt and me trying to get some kind of something done for the school year and we have no blogging for over a week! But we are back and hopefully will be posting more regularly. We have been so sleepy we haven't even taken many pictures. But I promise I will bust out the camera a little more often.

One month ago (at exactly the time this blog is posting), little Payton Grace came into this world announced her arrival into this crazy world with her powerful lungs. Those lungs are still powerful. I can not believe it has already been an entire month. She is changing every day and it makes me a little sad to think that we are already at 1 month. Granted I want her to grow and be able to do all sorts of things that she currently can't do, but I want her to stay small too. Ever since she was conceived we have realized that she will do things on her time. Not when the books say she should, not when we want her to... it is all up to her. She is definitely her mommy's daughter in that she loves her naps. And she is definitely her daddy's daughter in every single other way. I swear she got all her DNA from him and I just carried her for 9 months. But she is adorable and I wouldn't have it any other way. As I type this, Payton is napping and I realize that she got one other thing from me... the way she stretches. Her entire body stretches and she makes faces and noises that are as cute as she is.

Payton's 1 month stats:

Sleep- Payton sleeps a lot these days. After all, being a newborn is hard work! I will say though that she does spend a lot more time awake these days and we just love spending time together. We have a pattern that she eats, stays awake a little while, then naps. Her wake time is getting longer and longer and sometimes she will even stay awake the entire time between her feedings (by her own choice- I don't force her). At night she usually is asleep by 11 for the night and wakes up around 3 to eat. Then has her first breakfast at around 6 or 7 and sleeps for 3 or 4 more hours. Then we start our day.

Daily Routine- Our routine currently is whatever Payton wants it to be. It is pretty much the same every day though, with her eating every 3-4 hours. Some days, after her first breakfast (at 6 or 7) she gets in bed with us and peacefully sleeps until her next meal. After that we get out of bed and move ourselves into the living room. After each feeding I keep her upright for about 10-15 minutes to let everything settle and make sure she has no burps left in her. Usually we try tummy time and sometimes she enjoys it, and sometimes she tries to go to sleep. After this Payton usually gets her bonding time with her swing and she just looks around until she gets too tired to stay awake. While she is sleeping I try to do some stuff for work, but usually I either fall asleep or she wakes up just as I get started (she likes to try 10-20 minute cat naps). She eats again and then we hang out for a bit (watching Let's Make a Deal). This is our cuddle time- Payton likes to climb all over me so she does that for a little bit until she gets tired then falls asleep on my chest and we both relax. Sometimes I nap with her, other times I put her down and try to clean up some (or at the very least, get the dishes done). Then, shocker here, she eats again! And right around this time (dinner time) is when she thinks she needs to be fussy. Once she is done fussing, I finish the dishes if they weren't done. Sometimes we try tummy time again. Sometimes I let her just lay on her back and play with her play mat toys. At 8pm most nights she listens to her Disney music (assuming I remember to turn it on) and we wait for Daddy to get home. Once he is home, we get to eat our dinner (often times with him holding her because he missed her) and then we start her bedtime routine. On bath night she gets a bath (which she loves- and hates to get out), gets a nice lotion massage, we read her at least one story, one nursery rhyme, and one bible story, and we bring her to bed. She gets cuddle time with daddy and then she goes to bed by 11. Sometimes earlier. On non bath nights we do the same, just without the bath.

Feeding- for the most part she eats 3 ounces every 3-4 hours. Just yesterday though she started having 4 ounces a couple times. We started with Thursday night's bedtime feeding and then Friday morning she had 4. We aren't entirely sure she is ready for 4 ounces at every meal yet so we just make 3 and see if she wants more when she finishes those 3. She has developed this new thing where she cries when we try to burp her because she thinks we are taking her food away. Once she realizes she's not going to starve and we aren't giving it back until she burps she gives up the crying, burps, and enjoys more food.

birth- 6lbs 8oz
2 weeks- 7lbs 8oz
1 month- (our at home estimate) was 8lbs even a few days ago (she has a dr appointment Monday and we will update this then) 8lbs 15oz

birth- 20 inches
2 weeks- 20 1/4 inches
1 month- I will know Monday 21inches

Diaper size- newborn still- we tried size 1's and they were just ginormous- they were almost up to her shoulders and so loose around her legs everything would have spilled out. So we are sticking with newborn a little longer. (Update: We have tried Huggies size 1 and those seem a little better so we are alternating the pampers N and Huggies 1)

Clothing size- newborn and even some of those are still too big. I have put a couple 0-3 mos clothes on her because I wanted her to wear something different. Everyone said "don't get too many newborn clothes, she won't be in them long"  here we are 1 month later and still in them!

Hair color-
birth- brown and a lot of it
1 month- brown but it seems to be lightening and even getting mommy's natural red highlights (you can see them in the sun)- still a lot of it- but it seems she is losing some

Eye color-
birth- brown/green with a blue outline
1 month- it appears she will have eyes like her daddy- some days they look green, other days brown, other days hazel, and even once or twice they have looked blueish gray.

Favorite toy/entertainment- Payton loves spending time in her swing or bouncy seat. We got one of the car seat toys that is black and white to hang on her bouncy seat bar (she can't reach the toys that are on the bar and they don't rattle anyways so they are boring) and she enjoys playing with that (see video in this post. )

Nicknames- there are already a ton... Pretty Girl, Baby Girl, Stinks (if you smelled this kid's diapers you would understand), Chunka (because she is a slob when she eats- this is lovingly given to her not because she is chunky- because she isn't even close to chunky), Princess... I am sure there are more things we call her I just can't think of them right now.

Funniest moments- well there have been a couple of these and they all revolve around her bodily functions. At one month old they don't do much else... one funny moment was when we were changing her poopy diaper and just as Tim got all done cleaning her, she started going more... so we threw another diaper under her. She finished, we cleaned her, got a new diaper under her, and she started going again! We went through 4 diapers in that one change. Another one was when we had a girls day with Auntie and Nonny. At target, Nonny said she would feed Payton so we could finish browsing (the baby section of course). We went back to find them and they were missing. I found them walking towards us with a look of being completely mortified on my mom's face. Of course Payton had pooped in Target... and it was a bad one. We got her into the bathroom and it was all over the place. We ended up practically giving her a sponge bath right there in the Target bathroom... good thing I had an extra onesie in my bag. And just Thursday night, I finally got in the shower while Tim was getting his cuddle time in with Payton. When I got out he said "get her changing table ready- this is bad" so I pull up her changing table on her pack and play and try to finish getting dressed from the shower. Tim started changing her and sure enough as he's cleaning her off, she peed on him. His reactions to this are what make me laugh as hard as I do. Needless to say we had more cleaning up to do, and Payton just laid there with a very content look on her face.

Favorite moment- I think my favorite moment was giving Payton her first real bath (and every bath there after). Another favorite is when feeding her and she just looks up at me with those big (color of the day) eyes. Oh and another was when Tim would stick his tongue out, she did it back. They did this back and forth for a few times. Ok so I have a lot of favorites, but can you blame me?!

Milestones- well since she was born, Payton has been lifting her head for long amounts of time. She now looks around a lot and can hold it up for even longer and will stare at you intently if you are talking to her. She also has discovered her hands and can see her toys and swats at them. (Coincidentally she discovered her hair on the top of her head too and pulled it- hard! She screamed and her clench was so tight I couldn't get her to let go.... 20 minutes later, she did it again.) She is really good at turning her head from side to side and will follow her toys or the person talking to her. She gives little smiles but they aren't fully intentional yet. They are different from her "gas smiles" but they aren't always because of something someone says or does. She is trying her hardest to start jabbering but hasn't quite figured that out just yet. Her mouth moves but nothing comes out.

Firsts- well everything she has done has been a first since it is her first month. But..
first walk around the neighborhood
first bath
first trip to the mall
first time seeing her hands
first time playing with her toys
first time turning head from side to side
first time in her crib (it was only for 10 minutes but she took a quick nap in there while I tried setting up her floor mat)
first time meeting her BFF Aubrey (check out Aubrey in all her cuteness at Tangled Up In You)

I am amazed everyday watching this little girl grow. I can't wait until she starts doing more and more. I will truly miss all of this when I have to go back to work. I am just hoping I get to see one or two more milestones before I go back to work because after that I will have to catch everything the second or third time she does it. I wouldn't trade this little girl for the world! And because you assumingly read this far through all my babbling on about our baby, I will give you some pictures... but unfortunately you will have to check for them tomorrow because we are taking her one month pictures tomorrow when Tim is off work. We like to do them together. I will be sure to post when I upload them.

Here are some pictures... we plan to take more because Payton didn't want anything to do with it the other day...

a 5 day hiatus

Payton and I will probably be taking a 5 day hiatus from blogging- but with good reason. Her Auntie Ash is here visiting and we need to spend our time with her. We have lots of running around to do and pictures to take. If we do post they will probably be scatterbrained and done late at night, like this one. Oh who am I kidding, ever since she was born these posts have been scatterbrained! Any bit of brain I had left from "pregnancy brain" I have no sacrificed to "baby brain". Literally- I can think of something I have to do and not two minutes later I have forgotten.

Anyways- today marks Payton being 3 weeks! I can't believe she was born 3 weeks ago. Even with her fussiness (that we think may be gas), we love her more and more every day. But how could we not? Things Payton is doing now....
* loving tummy time and turning her head from side to side. Once she does it one time and we get excited for her, she wants to keep doing it to show off.
* pretending to hold her own bottle
* gripping my fingers when I am feeding her (I really think this is her way of saying "don't you dare try to take that bottle away mommy!"
* almost not fitting into newborn diapers anymore (however we tried a size 1 on her today and it was too big)
* focusing on people when they talk to her
* bathing every other day (ish) and loving it! (even tonight when she refused to keep her legs in the water and was making herself cold, she was loving the bath)
* playing with toys that are hanging. We bought her a toy for her carseat (I have like 6 of them at home but we were out and about and had nothing so I bought one more) that she was enamored with. So I attached one of the others to her bouncy seat and she loves it. (video below)
* getting lots more kisses from Roscoe (a post about his taking to her will be coming soon...)
* working on getting on a decent schedule. She pretty much eats every 3 hours (sometimes 4 hours, but that is rare) and at night goes a little bit longer. We really only have one true middle of the night feeding ( around 3am). We have a late night (11pm ish) then an early morning (6am ish) so it isn't too bad.
* coincidentally listening to me when I tell her to poop at specific times (no joke... I told her yesterday to wait until I was in the dentist's chair when Nonny had her... sure enough as soon as I went in, she pooped. Tonight I told her to wait til Daddy got home and sure enough, she did!)

We have found that swaddling her really helps her sleep. Tonight we decided to try one of the Halo Sleep Sacks. We are expecting for her to bust her insanely strong arms out a lot easier in this than in our swaddle but we will see. Right now she is very peaceful and that makes me one happy mama. Here is a picture of her (taken on our video camera)...

And as mentioned above, her video playing with her toy. This made me so excited! I am now more glad than ever that we splurged on a video camera!

And how are Tim and I doing you may ask? We are doing pretty well I think. I am adjusting to the sleepiness and actually managed to not need a nap for the past couple days. I am going to try to do without naps so that when I go back to work I am able to get things done and spend time with her and still function. Payton has her fussy moments that we are attributing to gas, which was making me sad for her and feeling useless because I couldn't get her to feel better. A few times she just can't manage to get her burps out no matter how hard we try. After many suggestions (and my fair share of research) we decided to try gripe water. Within five minutes of giving it to her she let out a huge burp. I then let out a huge sigh of relief. No parent wants to see their baby uncomfortable and that is precisely what she ends up being. We also cycle her legs to help her belly. That seems to help. I think we are learning and doing pretty good (no mater how emotional I may get...) and can only get better. As far as I am concerned, we have the perfect family (and I would guess Tim would agree). We are off to bed (because as you can see in the above picture, Payton is already sleeping, which means we should be too...). Tomorrow the girls have lots of running around to do. We may do a post, we may not.

Because she can...

Ever since Payton was born she has had a fascination with putting her hands on her bottle and trying to push ours out of the way. I mentioned in another post that I finally just let her try to hold it and she did pretty good for a few seconds. Well Saturday, after her bath, Payton was having a bottle and she decided to try again. This time it was long enough for Tim to look, me to text my mom to tell her, and take a pic to send her. I grabbed the bottle back after that. When Tim got back in the house he said to see if she would hold it again so we could record it. Sure enough she did. And we got it on video. (I realize that she probably doesn't realize what she is doing- but it is cute nonetheless.) In the video you will see me push the bottle up some but that is only because she was running out of formula and needed to get more in the nipple so she didn't suck in air.

Happy 4th of July

Today is a big day... it is Payton's first holiday (besides Father's Day)! I made her a cute dress to wear and we of course did a photoshoot with her. We didn't go anywhere this year. We had my parents over and cooked out. Next year we will be back home for a wedding and I think Tim may already be counting down to when she can be in Lakewood for the 4th of July. I contemplated seeing fireworks this year but she is just too small to be out there getting eaten up by bugs and who knows how she would react to them.

Today was also the first day Payton got to hang out outside (because it wasn't excrutiatingly hot). We were out on our patio pretty much all day and she just bounced away in her bouncy seat. It definitely wore her out because now she is sound asleep in her swing. We have a cute onesie for her to wear to bed tonight and will be doing some pictures in that too after her bath. (Look for those pictures in another post- possibly Wednesday.) Also, be on the lookout for a cute side by side of Payton and her cousin Madison in their matching dresses...

We hope everyone had a very enjoyable holiday!

Splish, Splash, she was takin' a bath...

Payton finally got her first big girl bath... big girl in the sense that it wasn't a sponge bath. She has been very clingy the past two days, I believe, compliments of her shot. Since she didn't have any desire to sleep yesterday we decided to give her a bath around 5:30 to see if it would calm her down. I figured she was already mad, it couldn't get any worse. So we got everything ready (yes I documented all of this...)

and then got Payton ready. Usually she hates getting naked but she didn't seem too concerned today.

And got her in the tub and let her get a feel for it. She was really content. And that little animal cloth that is covering her was a gift at our shower- best thing ever! It kept her nice and warm (and covered her little business- because that is no one else's business to see!)

"Alright this bath stuff isn't so bad!"

Scrub a dub dub

Roscoe came in for a brief moment to see what we were doing to her...

But for the most part he spent his time out in the hallway... his thoughts here... "No way am I going in there, I might be next"

Washing her hair (because she has some!- can you tell I am still in shock that this baby has as much hair as she does?!)

"This is the life"

Trying to eat her warm cloth.

"Why'd you stop??"

All done! Bathing cutie!

Roscoe making sure everything is ok

"Roscoe, it wasn't so bad!"

Overall it was a great bath for her. Until it was time to get dressed... this picture above was the last happy time of the bath process. She was really upset that we took her out and were making her get out of her nice warm towel and get dressed. But after that she ate and fell asleep. For the first time all day! I can't wait to give her another bath!
